Australian Zoe Buckman has finished seventh in the women's 1500m final at the world athletics championships in Moscow.

Australian Zoe Buckman has finished a gallant seventh in the women's 1500m at the world athletics championships in Moscow.

Buckman, 24, had surged into medal contention after smashing her personal best with the fastest overall time in the semi-finals.

But she was unable to repeat the effort in the final, finishing seventh in four minutes 5.77 seconds.

Sweden's Abeba Aregawi won gold in 4:02.67, with the minor medals going to defending world champion Jenny Simpson from the US and Kenyan Hellen Obiri.

Earlier, Tristan Thomas has run a brilliant anchor leg to lift Australia into the final of the men's 4x400 relay.

Thomas received the baton from Alex Beck in fifth place, but was able to overtake three runners in the last 150 metres, allowing Australia to finish second and book an automatic place in Friday night's final.

The last runner Thomas overtook was Ojay Ferguson from the Bahamas, ensuring that the 2012 Olympic champions were eliminated in the heats.

The Australian team of Steve Solomon, Craig Burns, Beck and Thomas clocked three minutes 2.48 seconds as they finished second in their heat behind Russia.

"I got myself into a nice rhythm and after 250 metres I thought 'bugger it, give it a go and see if you can hold on'," said Thomas, who had advanced to the semi-finals of the 400m hurdles earlier in the championships.

"I slowly wound it up.

"I came into the straight and you look down at your legs and say 'how are you feeling boys?'

"Lucky for me they felt alright.

"Having run a few relays before I was really calm."

Australia have a proud modern-day history in the men's 4x400m relay, having won silver at the Athens Olympics, bronze at the 2009 world championships and gold at the 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Thomas was also a member of the 2009 team.

The United States were the fastest qualifiers for Friday's final in 2:59.85.
