Budget confidence bounce eases

ANZ/Roy Morgan's consumer confidence index fell one per cent last week, partly reversing the 3.6 per cent gain made the week after the federal budget.

The lift in consumer confidence from the federal budget has eased off but sentiment is still in much better shape than it was after last year's unpopular budget.

Consumer confidence fell one per cent last week, according to research from ANZ and Roy Morgan, partly reversing the 3.6 per cent gain made the week after the May 12 federal budget.

But the index is 14.3 per cent higher than it was a year ago.

ANZ chief economist Warren Hogan said consumers have reacted more positively to this year's budget but the sustainability of this lift will be reliant on the budget measures getting passed and the economy improving.

"More importantly, confidence amongst consumers requires job creation and a stable, or better still, falling unemployment rate," he said.
