Builders assess south Sydney home collapse

Emergency authorities have left the site of a southern Sydney home that partially collapsed on Wednesday afternoon, and builders will assess the damage.

NSW Fire and Rescue has left the site of a house that partially collapsed in Sydney's south, and a builder will assess the damage.

An elderly man and his daughter were forced to flee after their Mascot home started to give way on Wednesday afternoon.

Fire crews were called just after 2.20pm to find one side the King Street house had collapsed onto a fence.

NSW Fire and Rescue had secured the property and a builder was taking over, Inspector Alan Cooper said.

"It seems some component of the building failed and as a result they believe the chimney moved sideways and brought the awning down and the side of the house, which in turn caused the roof to collapse," Insp Cooper told the Seven Network on Thursday.

A builder would make an assessment on Thursday, Insp Cooper said.

The 1920s house was one of the few free-standing properties in the street, he said.
