Bulk of Aussies back energy target: poll

A new poll has found more than three-quarters of Australians believe a clean energy target is important, as the government considers whether to implement one.

A majority of Australians support the roll out of a clean energy target - including Liberal voters, research suggests.

A poll commissioned by the Climate Council, published on Tuesday, found 77 per cent felt a target was important, especially 18 to 24 year olds (83 per cent).

The Turnbull government is still considering whether to adopt a clean energy target as recommended by chief scientist Alan Finkel.
