Bull escapes from Perth Royal Show

A runaway bull forced Perth Royal Show attendees to leap out of its way before it was caught on a nearby porch.

Perth Royal Show attendees were forced to jump out of the way of a runaway bull that was captured on the verandah of a nearby house.

The Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia said the steer escaped from the trade cattle unloading area at Claremont Showgrounds on Monday but was contained within a few minutes and returned to the cattle holding area.

Reports someone had been hit by the castrated bull were incorrect, a spokeswoman said, but confirmed several people had to jump out of its way. They were not injured.

The animal did find its way out of the showground and was caught on the verandah of a nearby house, she said.

An on-site veterinarian and members of the society's livestock team took care of the bull, which was not injured.

Chief executive Peter Cooper said the immediate response from the livestock team and veterinarian ensured that the animal was secured quickly and returned to a safe environment.

Safety of the animals on site as well as members of the public are our number one priority, Mr Cooper said.

The society said it would review livestock unloading protocols to minimise the risk of such incidents occurring in the future.
