Veteran Western Bulldogs skipper Robert Murphy will extend his AFL career into a 17th season after signing a new one-year contract.

Murphy has agreed to a fresh deal with the Bulldogs that will keep him at the club until at least the end of 2017.

The 32-year-old defender has been in excellent form so far this season under new coach Luke Beveridge, averaging 22.7 possessions in the first seven games and ranking in the top 10 across the competition in kicks, rebound 50s and bounces.

Murphy said his enthusiasm hadn't waned even after all these years.

"Grateful and proud to go around with the Dogs next year," he tweeted."

Bulldogs list manager Jason McCartney said Murphy's intention to continue his career with the club that drafted him back in 1999 was welcome news.

"It goes without saying that Bob is such a key figure at our football club," McCartney said.

"His on-field performances have continued on at the highest of levels, and his leadership has been first-rate."

Murphy, who was handed the captaincy at the end of last year, has played 278 games for the Bulldogs and was a 2011 All-Australian.

The side is sitting in eighth place on the 2015 ladder after seven games, of which they've won four and lost three.

On Sunday they visit the MCG where they'll face Melbourne and look to rebound from two tight losses to St Kilda and leaders Fremantle.
