Jasprit Bumrah's first Test man of the match award is a fitting end to a dream debut year.

Only Australian Terry Alderman and West Indian Curtly Ambrose have taken more Test wickets in their first calendar year.

The right armer with the weird action and sublime control had his best Test figures of 6-33 in the first innings of the Boxing Day Test as Australia were skittled for 151.

His slower ball that trapped Shaun Marsh at lunch on day three was one of the highlights of the summer.

He snared another three wickets in the second innings - fittingly ending Pat Cummins' fighting knock with a superb delivery - to finish with nine for the match.

That gave him man of the match honours and 48 wickets for 2018 in nine Tests, all outside India.

The point has been made that playing no Tests at home on their traditionally spin-friendly decks probably helps an Indian fast bowler.

But after a solid grounding in white-ball cricket, Bumrah came to Tests with an impeccable temperament and plenty of bowling smarts.

Captain Virat Kohli praised Bumrah for his obsessive work ethic and fitness, along with his approach.

"The mindset he has is what separates him from anyone else in the world right now," Kohli said.

"He looks at the pitch and he doesn't think it's a hard toil on these wickets, he thinks 'how can I make a breakthrough for the team and your mindset?' - (that) separates you from the rest.

"He is as strong headed as I have seen anyone in the past and that's the key to his success.

"The way he has matured in Test cricket and the areas he has bowled so quickly in his Test career, I think it's a scary sign for the batsmen around the world."

49 @ 23.20, Curtley Ambrose (West Indies) 1988
