Bureau warns of over 150mm rainfall in Qld

Capricornia, Wide Bay and southeast Queensland could be hit with more than 150mm of rain in coming days, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

Coastal and southeast Queensland could be drenched with more than 150mm worth of rain in the next few days.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the rain has eased in central Queensland as the unstable weather on Thursday afternoon moved to the Capricornia, Wide Bay and southeast Queensland regions.

While falls of up to 100mm are forecast for the state's southeast, some areas could see more than 150mm fall in coming days.

Flash flooding could be a risk if storms dump heavy deluges in a short period.

The bureau says tributaries of the Fitzroy River could overflow, but any flooding is unlikely to exceed a moderate peak at Rockhampton.

"Especially south of Rockhampton, Friday will be the wettest day," forecaster Gordon Banks told AAP.

Affected areas would probably have to wait until Saturday morning to see clear skies, he said.

The bureau had issued a severe weather warning on Thursday for Mackay, Proserpine, Bowen, Hamilton Island, Sarina, Bundaberg and Gladstone.

At McCreadys Creek, near Mackay, 105mm of rain fell in 30 minutes about noon.

Emergency services had to rescue two motorists stranded in swollen creeks on Wednesday night - one on the Capricorn Highway and another on the Gregory Highway, near Emerald.

A number of roads in Mackay were closed on Thursday because of the heavy rain.
