Tom Burton has wrapped up Australia's medal haul at the sailing World Cup regatta in Hyeres, clinching a gold in the Laser class.

Australia also claimed two silver medals at the weekend's first European leg of the World Cup series, which is also the first major event on the road to selection for next year's Rio Olympic Games.

Olympic gold medallists Nathan Outteridge and NSW's Iain Jensen secured the silver medal in the 49er on Saturday with one day to spare.

Meanwhile, Olympic gold medallist and five-time world champion Mathew Belcher teamed up with dual world champion Will Ryan to win Sunday's medal race and took the silver in the men's 470.

Burton, the world No.1 Laser sailor, took over the yellow leader's jersey on day two of the regatta and never let it go.

Tension was high on the final day following a dramatic night in the protest room.

Burton had lost points in a heated battle with Croatian Tonci Stipanovic, which saw the New South Welshman slip into third.

But after it was determined Stipanovic had failed to sail a proper course, Burton was awarded points in a redress to start Sunday's medal race with a slim lead over Great Britain's Nick Thompson, who won silver.

It's the third consecutive year the Australian has won the Hyeres meeting.

"This was my hat-trick here in Hyeres, three years in a row so this win is pretty special," Burton said.

"I sailed quite well all week, but some things didn't really go my way.

"So it was just nice to finish it all off on an up, sail well and get the job done."

The next ISAF Sailing World Cup event will be held at Weymouth, England, in June.
