A bushfire near a university in Perth's northern suburbs has been downgraded.

Emergency services say the fire to the east of Edith Cowan University student accommodation in Joondalup has been contained but not yet controlled.

There is smoke in the area and residents have been advised to close all doors and windows.

Earlier on Monday a university spokesman said the residential village, childcare centre and buildings 17, 19 and 21 had been evacuated.

Separately, an emergency warning remains in place for Meelon in the Shire of Murray, south of Perth, where there is a threat to lives and homes.

More than 1000 hectares have been burnt.

The cause of the fire is suspicious, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services says.
