Bushfire threatens Tasmanian town

A bushfire is threatening a town in northern Tasmania with residents told to protect their homes.

Residents of a northern Tasmanian town have been told to protect their homes or leave in the face of an approaching bushfire.

The Tasmanian Fire Service (TFS) says the blaze could threaten the town of Lefroy, near George Town, within the next two to four hours.

"This fire will be difficult to control. There may be embers, smoke and ash falling on Lefroy," a TFS warning said on Tuesday night.

"You need to start taking action now to protect your family and your home.

"If you are not prepared for a bushfire, be ready to leave for a safer place. If you don't live near Lefroy, stay away."
