Bushwalkers safe in NSW national park

Two bushwalkers in southern NSW have been located but will have to stay outdoors for one more night because of inclement weather.

Two bushwalkers who have spent the past five nights in a southern NSW national park have been found but will spend another night outdoors due to inclement weather.

William McCarthy, 59, and Francisca Boterhoven De Haan, 60, are believed to have gone walking in the Morton National Park's Ettrema Gorge on Saturday.

Police were alerted on Wednesday after Mr McCarthy failed to return to his Canberra home by Tuesday as expected. His car was found in a car park at Ettrema.

A search was launched and about 2pm on Thursday the walkers made contact with emergency rescue officers by mobile phone.

Police said their location had been confirmed, they are uninjured and have shelter.

A decision was made to suspend the rescue operation until Friday morning because it would take a two-hour walk to reach them and heavy rainfall is forecast in the area.

Emergency services will on Friday morning decide whether they will be walked out or extracted by air.
