Business investment slumps further

Business investment fell by 4.0 per cent in the September quarter to be down by 13.7 per cent from a year before.

Business investment is down again and looks set to be sharply lower in the current financial year.

New investment in buildings and structure, and equipment plant and machinery, fell by 4.0 per cent in the September quarter and by 13.7 per cent from a year earlier after adjusting for regular seasonality and price changes, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Thursday.

The same survey showed the expected value of investment in 2016/17 is down by 14.3 per cent compared with the expectations held for 2015/16 this time a year ago.
