Butler tipped to become ALP president

Shadow minister Mark Butler is expected to be formally named the ALP's new national president on Tuesday.

Labor frontbencher Mark Butler is tipped to be declared the party's new national president when the final result of a ballot is released on Tuesday.

Labor sources say Mr Butler, a Left faction candidate, had a narrow lead over the Right's Tim Hammond, a West Australian barrister.

Mr Butler campaigned on a platform of giving grass-roots party members a greater say over policy and candidates, and will take a lead role in the party's national conference in Melbourne in July.

His office declined to comment, but the MP for Port Adelaide tweeted: "Thank you for voting in the ALP national president ballot".
