Cricket Australia has confirmed opener David Warner will miss the tour of Bangladesh with a fractured thumb.
Warner was forced to retire hurt in the first over of the second one-day clash with England after a delivery from paceman Steve Finn reared and hit him on the left glove.
He flew home on Monday and was widely expected to miss the two-match series which will be the two teams' first Test meeting since 2006.
"It's really disappointing," Warner said in a statement on Friday.
"I never want to miss a match for Australia but I'll be doing everything I possibly can to get back as quickly as possible."
Warner won't require surgery on his thumb and will aim to be fit for the first Test against New Zealand at the Gabba in November.
The Bangladesh tour would have been Warner's first since being appointed vice-captain and Steve Smith made captain following Michael Clarke's retirement.
Cricket Australia performance manager Pat Howard said ideally Warner would play in the first round of the Sheffield Shield which kicks off on October 27.
"David has been told that the fracture will take at least four weeks to stabilise and a further two weeks before he can start batting and catching again," Howard said.
"He will be reviewed by the specialist at the end of the month to determine when he can resume playing."
Australia will face Bangladesh with a new-look opening pair after the retirement of reliable veteran Chris Rogers.
There could be as many as seven changes from the team which took the field in the first Ashes Test at Cardiff, with a raft of other players either retired, being rested or injured.
