Calais struggles amid migrant influx

Officials in Calais say they're struggling to cope with a huge influx of migrants trying to get to Britain.

The numbers in the town have leapt  from 200 at the beginning of last year -- to 3000 this month.

Many are so desperate to cross the channel they are attempting to board lorries in broad daylight.

Trafficking gangs are now also reportedly using private boats to smuggle people across the English Channel.

The rise in the number of migrants arriving in Calais is due to the growth in people trafficking operations across the Mediteranean from North Africa.

Since January, more than 41,000 people have entered Europe.

French border police this week have stopped nearly 20,000 people attempting to enter Britain -- many from Calais.
