Call for ad ban, postal vote at elections

Former federal MP Wilson Tuckey has made some bold suggestions for electoral reform.

A former Howard government minister has called for a ban on all forms of advertising, electronic messages and door-to-door campaigning during elections.

Wilson Tuckey, who also advocates postal voting to replace polling booths, has told the parliament's electoral matters committee the issuing of a writ for an election should trigger such a ban.

"I consider all voters should welcome peace at mealtimes," he said.

Instead, the electoral commission should conduct a single, pre-poll mailout to all voters with brief policy statements from political parties and commitments from independent candidates on key issues.

As well, the mailout should include a CV of each candidate, a ballot paper and return envelope.

He said new technology allowed the authentication of each voting slip.

"The same-sex marriage (postal vote) process has demonstrated the fundamental integrity of the voting public as has the operation of the WA local government postal vote," he wrote in a submission to the committee.
