Treasury has asked for advice from the public on what should be included in next year's federal budget.

Submissions to the budget, due to be handed down a month early on April 2, will close on February 1.

"The 2019/20 budget will reflect the government's plan to keep the economy strong and guarantee the essential services on which Australians rely," assistant Treasury minister Zed Seselja said.

It's expected submissions will be made by a wide range of business and community groups, ahead of an election due in May.

The budget is expected to return to surplus in 2019/20.
