There are warnings to medical organisations to do more to provide more opportunities for women scientists or risk losing funding.

In a new report, the National Health and Medical Research Council found that out of 46 organisations it surveyed, the majority rated poorly on measures such as flexible work arrangements, childcare and targeted fellowships.

The Council says its control of 800 million dollars in funding allows it to withhold money from those organisations that don't improve their gender policies.

It's a move that is being welcomed by Doug Hilton, Director of the Walter and Eliza Hall institute of Medical Research in Melbourne, who spoke with Romi Levine.
