An environmental group is calling on the federal government to clean up waste at a former American research and naval station in Antarctica.

Friends of the Earth says Australia has a responsibility under international law to clean up the mess at Wilkes Station, which was transferred from US to Australian control in 1959.

It says accumulated waste at Wilkes Station includes asbestos, chemicals and acid leaking from old batteries.

Friends of the Earth spokesman Cam Walker told Peggy Giakoumelos while there have been clean up efforts in the past, they haven't gone far enough.
