Call to extend free vaccines to seniors

The medical community together with advocacy groups for senior Australians are accusing the federal government of ageism.

It comes after the release of a report about the awareness, experiences and attitudes of senior Australians towards immunisation.

The report has found that at least 90 per cent of senior Australians would consider vaccinations, if they were funded by the Federal Government's National Immunisation Program.

Currently, the program funds only two of the four recommended vaccinations for this age group, which means senior Australians are particularly vulnerable to shingles and tetanus.

Michael O'Neill is the Chief Executive of the lobby group National Seniors Australia.

He told Aileen Phillips the federal government must expand its immunisation program to older people.
