Aboriginal people should be recognised in the West Australian constitution as the land's traditional owners, according to Kimberley MP Josie Farrer.
In parliament on Thursday, Ms Farrer congratulated Premier Colin Barnett and opposition leader Mark McGowan for their commitment to recognise the Noongar people of the state's south-west, but challenged them to extend that recognition to all Aboriginal people.
A bill to that effect was read in Parliament in 2004 but was not passed.
She said it was time for the change, which would be truly historic not just from a state perspective, but also a national perspective.
"I know this is not a timid step and I know there are people on both sides of this house who want to shy away from this because they will be afraid, but timidity has never achieved anything great," Ms Farrer said.
"This bill will send a beautiful message and an invitation for all Western Australians to be united under our constitution.
"It will be a way to demonstrate to the rest of our nation that WA accepts and recognises that true reconciliation means bold action, brave people and meaningful dialogue.
"Members, when this bill is introduced, do not be afraid, do not be timid, just be magnificent."
