Calls for a national inquiry into alcohol violence

There are now calls for a national inquiry, with a new survey finding most people blame alcohol for making the city unsafe.

On any Saturday night in Sydney's CBD violent brawls and arrests occur.

Caterina Giorgi from the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education is all too familiar with the issue.

"Alcohol is more readily available than it has been. It's more heavily promoted and it's more affordable. The community now acknowledges that alcohol is a significant problem and they want something done."

The Greens want a federal inquiry to hear from health professionals and victims' families.

"I don't think there's been a better time for the Commonwealth to take a look at measures to reduce the impacts we're seeing", said Western Australian Senator, Scott Ludlam.
