There are renewed calls for Australia to play a more active role to ensure that peace and stability return to South Sudan.

Last month, the country's President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar agreed a peace deal to end a months long conflict.

The deal, signed in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, calls for an immediate truce and the formation of a transitional government ahead of the drafting of a new constitution and new elections.

According to the United Nations, fighting in the world's youngest nation has left thousands dead, and displaced more than one million people.

Nyok Gor is from the South Sudan Australia Peace Initiative, which promotes reconciliation within Australia's South Sudanese community.

He was the only Australian to attend the closed door negotiations in Addis Ababa and spoke to Santilla Chingaipe upon his return.
