The Australian Red Cross is calling for more donors to give blood and save lives.

It's celebrating reaching 500-thousand volunteer blood donors as part of this year's National Blood Donor week.

The organisation's National Media Manager, Shaun Inguanzo says the blood donor centres accept 25-thousand donations each week.

That's the equivalent of a blood donation every eight seconds.

But he told Van Nguyen, it's critical to keep raising public awareness to recruit more donors.
