Finishing runner-up was fine with Cameron Smith as the young Australian secured a return to the US PGA Tour for next season.

A late bogey proved costly as Smith shot a closing three-under 68 to finish one stroke behind winner Grayson Murray (68) in the web.com Tour's Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship in Ohio on Sunday.

But Smith wasn't sweating about missing out on a career-first win on the secondary tour in the third of its four playoffs events.

Having finished 157th in the US PGA Tour's FedEx Cups standings, the 23-year-old Queenslander headed to the web.com Tour playoffs and his $US108,000 in prizemoney on Sunday took him from 48th to third with $US114,910 in the race for 25 PGA Tour cards for the 2016-17 season.

``I'm just happy that I'm heading back to the PGA Tour, to be honest,'' Smith said. ``That was, obviously, the goal through these four weeks and to get it done a week early is definitely a relief.''

After Smith made a bogey at the par-4 15th, Murray finished with five pars to close out the tournament at 12-under 272, also wrapping up promotion to the main tour.
