Cory Bernardi has some extreme views but even he thought homophobic comments by former Liberal MP Ross Cameron at an anti-Islam function were inappropriate.

During a speech to the Q Society, Mr Cameron described the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper as the Sydney Morning Homosexual, while controversial cartoonist Larry Pickering also spoke, saying not all Muslims are bad "they do chuck pillow-biters off buildings".

"This was an own goal from some of (Q Society's) supporters ... it was totally inappropriate," Senator Bernardi, who resigned from the Liberal Party last week to form his on conservative party, told Sky News on Sunday.

Cameron on Sunday told his Sky News show Outsiders that he had made a "sincere apology" for the comments and said the Pickering joke could "not be defended".

"Larry Pickering is a scumbag. He should not be taken seriously in politics," his co-host Mark Latham said.
