Campaign against high drug prices

Four key national groups have joined together to highlight what they say are the high prices Australians pay for prescription drugs.

The Consumers Health Forum of Australia, CHOICE, the Australian Council of Social Service and the Grattan Institute say Australians are being forced to pay some of the highest prices for medicines in the world.

Their campaign aims to counter industry attempts to restrict the Federal Government's capacity to cut drug prices.

The independent think tank the Grattan Institute says the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme pays at least $1.3 billion dollars a year too much for prescription drugs as a result.

The director of Grattan's health program, Professor Stephen Duckett, began by telling Darren Mara about the types of price mark ups in pharmacies around Australia.
