Australian Cate Campbell qualified second-fastest for the women's 100m freestyle final at the world championships in Barcelona on Thursday.

Event favourite Campbell clocked 53.09 seconds in the semi-finals to book a spot in Friday night's final behind fastest qualifier Sarah Sjostrom (52.87) of Sweden.

Campbell will be without sister Bronte in the final, after the younger sibling clocked 54.46 to be 11th fastest in the semis.

Cate Campbell emerged as favourite for the world title following her sensational swim in the women's 4x100m relay on the opening night of the meet.

Her swim of 52.33 was the fastest ever women's 100m time in a textile suit by almost half a second.
