Captain Terry Campese has been released from the final year of his contract with NRL club Canberra to take up a deal with English Super League side Hull KR.

The move comes after much speculation that Campese was on the outer in the national capital.

Campese made his debut with the Raiders in 2004, playing over 100 NRL matches for the club and captained the side over the past three seasons from 2012-2014.

He also played State of Origin for NSW and a Test for Australia.

Raiders chief executive Don Furner has applauded Campese's contribution to Canberra and said he will be remembered as a fierce competitor.

"The Raiders want to take the opportunity to wish Terry and his family all the best for the future and acknowledge the wonderful contribution he's made to the Raiders both on and off the field," Furner said.

"He will always be considered a Raider and he will always be welcome here."

The news comes only a day after Canberra announced it had signed the Roosters' New Zealand international prop Frank-Paul Nuuauassala.
