Can Bulga residents halt Rio Tinto mine expansion?

Residents in the New South Wales community of Bulga are hoping to convince Premier Mike Baird to halt Rio Tinto's plans to expand its coal mine in their township.

Residents in the New South Wales community of Bulga are hoping to convince Premier Mike Baird to halt Rio Tinto's plans to expand its coal mine in their township.

The community has been fighting the expansion at Warkworth coal mine for five years, and succeeded in two court cases against it.

Now Rio Tinto has launched a fresh bid, and despite being similar to the previously rejected cases it now has regulations changed by the state government on its side.

The economic significance of a coal resource is now the principal consideration for mining development approvals, and the extension has been labelled 'capable fo being approved.'

But Vice President of the Bulga Milbroadale Progress Association John Krey told Rachael Hocking, the only solution is for the plans to be axed.
