Can Twitter, TV save each other?

Can the twitterverse and television complement one another? CNN's Maggie Lake reports.

Television audiences are taking conversations about their favourite shows to straight Twitter.

Investors hope this convergence will lead to profitability for the social media enterprise.

“Over the last few years we’ve recognised that Twitter is the second screen for TV,” said Twitter CEO, Dick Costolo.

Close to nine million tweets were sent during the ‘Oscars’ this year and fans glued to popular series like ‘Breaking Bad’ often provide live updates during episodes.

A new study found fifty-five per cent of Americans watch television with a second screen device to enhance their viewing experience.

“In a world in which the broadcasters have traditionally come to think of technology companies as competitors, we view ourselves as complementary to what those folks are doing,” said Costolo.
