Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has said the shooting attack in Canada's capital overnight has the hallmarks of a terrorist plot.

Speaking to the ABC this morning, Ms Bishop said that while it would be premature to conclusively decide on the reasons behind a gunman's attacks on guards at a war memorial, and later rampage of Canada's parliament house, there are indications it was motivated by terrorist ambitions.

"It does have the hallmarks of a terrorist attack," Ms Bishop said.

The foreign minister said the decision to attack Parliament House and Ottowa's war memorial indicated terrorist motivations.

"For quite some time these murdererous brutal terrorist groups have been speaking about attacks on this kinds of institutions in those sorts of countries including Canada, Australia, the United States," she said.

"It's too early to say but I am concerned."

But Ms Bishop rejected speculation that security has been increased at Parliament house in Canberra today in response to the attacks.

"The Australian Parliament house has had increased security for quite some time," she said.

"There's no specific threat against the Parliament House here."
