Canada down Opals on Euro tour

Canada has beaten the Australian women's basketball team 72-60 in the penultimate game of their European tour.

Canada has ended the Australian Opals' winning run, beating them 72-60 in the penultimate game of their pre-Olympic tour of Europe.

The world No.2 Australian women's basketball team led 18-10 at the first break on the back of some hard-nosed defence, but failed to hold on for the rest of Thursday morning's (AEST) clash in France.

They gifted Canada - ranked ninth in the world - 22 points off 22 turnovers, and managed to shoot at only 37 per cent.

"Credit to Canada they played hard for the win," coach Brendan Joyce said.

"The positives are they exposed areas we need to address ... and we must continue to learn and improve."

Joyce rotated through his roster in an attempt to share the minutes but struggled to find an effective combination after the great start.

"We had too many players down tonight but it provides a great challenge to see who will step up and deliver against the home team France for our final tour game tomorrow night," he said.

Liz Cambage again top-scored with 15 points to go with eight rebounds, while Suzy Batkovic added 13 points from 5-7 shooting off the bench.

Leilani Mitchell had a poor shooting night (1-8) but had nine of Australia's 17 assists.

The Opals play France on Friday morning (AEST), the eighth and final match of their fortnight-long tour of Europe.

They have won all bar two games, against Canada and Spain.
