Canada downs Aust in women's water polo

Australia's women's water polo team have lost 8-7 to Canada in their final match of the Holiday Cup in Los Angeles.

Australia's women's water polo team have ended their tour of North America with a 8-7 loss to Canada in Los Angeles.

The Stingers held a one-point lead with five minutes remaining in their final game of the Holiday Cup, but failed to fend off two late goals to secure their second win of the tournament.

Isobel Bishop starred for Australia with a treble, having found the net in each of the second, third and fourth quarters.

Skipper Bronwen Knock also scored a first-half double.

Defender Rowie Webster said it had been a disappointing finish to the competition, in which they only managed one victory - against Russia - with losses to arch-rivals the US, the Netherlands and Greece.

"We're disappointed with the loss today but there are a few positive steps moving forward that the team has got out of this tour," Webster said.

"It's a fairly new team so just being on tour together and learning more about each other is a positive.

"We've just got to learn from the experience and keep working hard back at our state institutes."

The Stingers, who lost to the US in the gold medal final of the Canada Cup a week earlier, will return to Australia for the Christmas break before heading to Perth for January's Aquatic Super Series against China.
