Canada inflation rises to 1.5% in January

Inflation in Canada rose to 1.5 per cent in January, driven by higher housing costs.

Canadians paid 1.5 per cent more for goods and services in January than a year earlier, the government statistical agency says.

The rise in inflation from 1.2 per cent the previous month was led by higher housing costs.

The costs of electricity, rent, homeowners' insurance, gasoline, passenger vehicle insurance premiums, passenger vehicles, fresh vegetables, fish, seafood, meat, clothing and footwear were also up.

Mortgage interest costs, and prices for cereal products and for fruit juices meanwhile declined.
