Canada issue threat to Aussie swimmers

The high performance director of Canada's swimming team says his squad is well placed to upset powerhouses Australia and the UK at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The Canadian swimming team is confident of dislodging Australia and Great Britain from their pedestals at next year's Commonwealth Games.

Canada's high performance director John Atkinson says they are hoping their Gold Coast-based training camps will help them overthrow the traditional swimming juggernauts.

"We've progressed significantly since we came to the Gold Coast for the Pan Pacific Championships in 2014 and last year we had our best Olympic result, so the team is on the up," Atkinson said.

Canada will not hold trials for the squad they plan to bring over, but will compile times from their local competitions, world championships and junior championships before deciding on their team.

There will be 30 to 40 swimmers in their swimming squad and Atkinson is excited by how 2016 Olympic bronze medallist Kylie Masse will perform.

"I think you have to look at the athletes who have performed strongly at the Olympic Games," Atkinson said on Wednesday.

"Kylie Masse has really progressed in the women's backstroke, it will be great to see how she goes at the World Championships this year in Budapest.

Canada won 11 medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and Atkinson believes they can top this target, but won't put a number on it until later this year.

"We'll look at how all the swimmers do at the World Championships and Junior World Championships, then try and set realistic goals after that," Atkinson said.

Canada become the first team to announce their training camps on the Gold Coast after Great Britain said they would be holding theirs in Brisbane.
