A gaffe by Prime Minister Tony Abbott at a press conference in Ottawa has prompted a slew of snarky remarks on Twitter.

Mr Abbott was asked a question about the Canadian Prime Minister’s recent remarks about Russia and Ukraine.

He said: "Well they're very forthright remarks, and I think that they're perfectly appropriate remarks for the Canadian Prime Minister to make. Canadia, Canada, probably has more involvement in the affairs of Europe than Australia often does, but ..."

Mr Abbott's quick correction didn't stop tweeters from responding to the gaffe, with #Canadia quickly trending in Australia.
