Canadian attack unlikely, Vic parly told

Victorian Parliament officials say there is nothing to suggest the building is a target, but vigilance is required.

The fatal shooting in the Canadian capital is a reminder to remain alert and take necessary precautions, Victorian parliamentary officials say.

A gunman killed a soldier who was guarding a war memorial in Ottawa before storming Canada's parliament buildings where he opened fire.

The gunman was shot dead by security while politicians and other staff scrambled to safety.

A joint statement by Victorian Speaker Christine Fyffe and President of the Legislative Council Bruce Atkinson said increased measures were already being implemented in response to the heightened national security alert.

"We remain vigilant at Victoria's Parliament House in relation to security and are actively assessing security measures as circumstances require," it said.

"The events in Ottawa remind us of the need to remain alert and take the necessary precautions.

"At the same time there is no information to suggest that the Victorian Parliament faces any specific threat so we should continue to go about our daily business in the knowledge that we are continually monitoring the situation and responding as required."
