A NSW mother suffering from life-threatening cancer has taken a stand against coal-seam gas by chaining herself to a truck as it tried to enter a construction site in northern NSW.

Amanda Musico, 48, from Elands, northwest of Taree, locked herself on to the vehicle on Friday at 8am at Santos's Leewood Water treatment plant south of Narrabri, which will support 850 CSG wells above the Great Artesian Basin.

She said the protest was on her "bucket list" after her cancer diagnosis.

"I've taken the chance while I'm still feeling fit and well to do my part to stop this coal-seam gas malignancy spreading into NSW," the mother of four said.

Fellow protester Naomi Hodgson said around 20 protesters had been told to move across the road by police but Ms Musico remained chained to the truck and was likely to be charged with obstruction.

"It's a real heroic effort... she wasn't sure if she was physically going to be able to do it," her 23-year-old son Jed Rose told AAP.

Mr Rose, who was also part of the protest, said his mother had always been passionate about the environment.

Santos' general manager of energy in NSW Peter Mitchley said the company was very confident it had the support of local residents despite protests.

"It is therefore unfortunate that a few protesters, who are breaking the law, are claiming to speak on behalf of the local community," Mr Mitchley said in a statement on Friday.
