The Cancer Council is urging smokers recently diagnosed with cancer to stop smoking, after new research suggesting it can significantly prolong their lives.

The report, released by the council, has been published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

It shows many people diagnosed with cancer continue to smoke and may be at least reducing their remaining time.

The lead author and director of cancer research at Cancer Council New South Wales, Associate Professor Freddy Sitas, talked with Ron Sutton about the findings.
