Capital investment data implications

Private capital expenditure for the March quarter came in stronger than expected. But going forward, businesses have pushed back their investment intentions.

The numbers are closely watched by the Reserve Bank because they not only give an indication of the currency economic situation, but also gives a read as to the direction of the economy based on what businesses expect to spend.

The Australian dollar rose on the back of the ABS data, but the money markets lifted the chances of an June 7th interest rate rise to only 11%.
