Captain America: The Winter Soldier has charged past The Lego Movie to take the no. 1 position at the Australian box office.
The Marvel sequel, starring Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson, raked in $6.058 million on its opening weekend, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
Meanwhile The Lego Movie, which was largely made here in Australia by Animal Logic, earned a close $5.711 million, making its debut in second place.
Together they pushed a number of films down two places, including Russell Crowe's biblical epic Noah which slipped to third, while animated flick Mr Peabody & Sherman fell to no. 4, George Clooney's The Monuments Men dropped to fifth, buddy cop movie Ride Along screeched into sixth, Need for Speed shifted to no. 7 and 300: Rise of an Empire retreated to eighth.
The Dallas Buyers Club heaved itself back into the top ten, climbing from eleventh to ninth, while Haifaa al-Mansour's Wadjda, the first feature film to be shot entirely in Saudi Arabia and first by a female Saudi director, came in at no. 10.
