A man accused of keeping his ex-girlfriend captive for three weeks in Sydney has pleaded not guilty to detaining her.
The 46-year-old has been charged with a string of offences after he allegedly detained and assaulted his former partner in his Canley Vale house in the city's west.
His lawyer Daniel Petrushnko told Liverpool Local Court the disability support pensioner had a "nice birthday celebration" for the woman's 50th, which her family attended, on February 11.
The man claimed his ex varied an apprehended violence order between the pair last month so she could see him as she dealt with a family member's death.
They had known each other for 20 years and he had organised grief counselling for her.
When the kidnap allegations were made a few days after the celebration, the man was quite surprised, Mr Petrushnko said.
However, the court heard that after his arrest the man declined to be interviewed by police.
The prosecution questioned why, if the claims were a mistake and easily accounted for, he didn't raise it during the police interview.
The man pleaded not guilty to five offences, including stalk and intimidate and detain a person, but guilty to possessing a sling shot.
Magistrate David Degnan said the man was on a number of good behaviour bonds linked to past domestic violence offences.
He was denied bail and the case was adjourned to Campbelltown Local Court in April.
