Firefighters have had to remove a large part of the ceiling of a Melbourne kindergarten that caught fire just hours before children were due to arrive.
The fire was initially reported as a car that caught alight after "impinging" on a building but once crews arrived at 5.15am on Monday they found the blaze had quickly spread the weatherboard preschool in Heidelberg.
"Forced entry was made into the pre-school and a large extent of the ceiling was removed to make access to the fire as it was spreading through the ceiling," the MFB said in a statement.
The fire has been deemed suspicious and Victoria Police will be investigating.
The single-storey Heidelberg Preschool opened in 1946 and sits behind a collection of larger buildings.
