Car owners scammed across NZ

Police are urging car owners to avoid a scam that promises to pay people to have their cars covered in advertising.

New Zealand's car owners are being warned of a scam that promises to pay people who use their cars for advertising.

Police say the scam has popped up throughout New Zealand and offers payment to people to have their cars "wrapped" in sign writing or advertisements.

It's understood that those who reply to the ad are sent a cheque to pay for the wrapping with instructions to cash the cheque at the bank.

They are then told to transfer the money to an offshore bank account to pay for the work.

However, the cheque bounces and leaves people out of pocket and sometimes in debt to the bank.

"This is a tried and true scam, please don't let yourself become the next victim," Detective Matthew Kay said on Monday.

"We implore anyone who may have seen the ad and who is thinking about contacting them to please avoid doing so.
