Cardinals' Molina in doubt for MLB season

St Louis catcher Yadier Molina's MLB season is in doubt after the Cardinals star suffered a thumb injury.

St Louis star Yadier Molina could miss the remainder of the Major League Baseball season for the Cardinals after suffering a torn right thumb ligament.

The Puerto Rican catcher, who turns 32 on Sunday, injured his thumb in the second inning of a 5-2 victory over Pittsburgh on Wednesday and will undergo surgery on Friday.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Molina would miss from eight to 12 weeks after a MRI exam revealed the tear.

That means he would not be back until, at best, the final three weeks of the six-month campaign.

In the worst-case scenario, he might not be able to return unless the Cardinals reach the playoffs in October.

The Cardinals, at 50-42, have moved within two games of Milwaukee for the National League Central division lead and own the final wildcard playoff position with half a season remaining.
