Carers' payments facing new income test

Laws stripping carers allowances from people earning more than $250,000 have passed through parliament.

Carers with a household income of more than $250,000 a year will lose their government payments after draft laws passed parliament.

The change, which is set to start from September, is expected to affect 6500 recipients whose family income is above the new threshold, meaning they will no longer be eligible for the Carer Allowance and the children's Carer Allowance Health Care Card.

Savings from the test will fund reforms in carer services, with carers able to access new tailored and targeted services from September 20.
