Victoria's coroner is set to announce whether there will be an inquest into the 2010 prison murder of Melbourne gangland figure Carl Williams.

Williams was clubbed to death by another inmate using part of an exercise bike.

The Victorian ombudsman later found the prison system had failed in its duty to protect the high-profile prisoner.

State Coroner Judge Ian Gray will reveal on Wednesday his decision on an inquest into Williams' death.

In November last year, the coroner also ruled there would be an inquest into the related and unsolved double murder of Melbourne couple Terence and Christine Hodson.

The Hodsons were murdered in 2004, when Mr Hodson was due to give evidence in court against former Victorian drug squad detective Paul Dale.

Williams had provided information to police also implicating Dale in the Hodson murders, however resulting charges against Dale and another man were dropped following Williams' death.

A police taskforce has since cleared Dale of any involvement in the deaths.
