Carlton want former AFL executive Simon Lethlean to be a candidate for the club's vacant chief executive role.
"I would hope Simon Lethlean will be part of this process," Blues president Mark LoGiudice told AFL Trade Radio on Friday, a day after Steven Trigg resigned.
"We expect there'll be multiple candidates and there'll be good quality candidates.
"And I do hope Simon Lethlean will be part of that process because he's got the right skill sets and he's got the expertise required to lead a football club."
Trigg quit on Thursday after three-and-a-half years in the role, with both parties maintaining the split had been months in the making.
Lethlean has been out of the AFL industry after resigning as the league's football boss in July amid an infidelity scandal.
"We are at the next stage of our pathway," LoGiudice said.
"We believe we needed a different type of leader to take us the next step in our growth.
"There are certain aspects of leadership that we're looking for ... that we believe Steven doesn't have that the next CEO we find will need."
LoGiudice denied claims the board had treated Trigg poorly and had sounded out Lethlean covertly.
"We haven't been working behind his (Trigg) back at all," he said.
"You're assuming he's (Lethlean) been approached and it's all been done behind his back.
"It's difficult. This is a difficult situation for Steven because he's done so many good things for the football club.
"It's business as usual this morning. Steven is a strong leader and we'll just continue as business as usual. He understands there'll be a transition."
Trigg is set to stay on in the role until a replacement is appointed.
